You Light Up My Life

Designer Aleksi Hautamäki has come up with a method of converting the characters of discarded company signs into street lamps using LEDs:

When company signs and logos are taken down, they get demolished. We recycle the characters into individual design objects. We dismantle the letters, clean them up, add a new transformer, LED lights and the power cord, and put them back together.

The letters are protected against rain (IP23). The re-installed LED’s have a life span of 30 000 hours. This procedure has been tested to meet the European electricity standards.

Hautamäki says his company, aptly named “Character”, is currently in the production stage, and hopes to go live very soon.

The photographs are just beautiful. There is something about the randomness and luminosity of the letters against the darkness that creates a striking visual.
