Dirty Projectors

David Byrne likes them.  So does Bjork.  Oh yeah, and a certain music blog gave them a 9.1 out of 10 for their latest effort, Bitte Orca. Indie act Dirty Projectors are a natural successor to the great collective musical experiments of the first half of the New Millenia (I’m thinking of Broken Social Scene here). They cover all sorts of musical territory and feature an ever-changing cast of characters and like BSS’s Kevin Drew, Dirty Projectors finds its focus in a  maestro extraordinaire, Dave Longstreth.  On their latest album, Bitte Orca, Longstreth seems to have found the sweet spot between his pen and his sound, setting aside his inner turmoil and making an indie record that’s light but not slight.  Bitte Orca is the kind of album that influences but doesn’t overwhelm, is artful but still easy to digest.  Who wouldn’t like an album that leads with a song like “Fucked for Life”?  These days we can all relate to that.
