March 9 may not mean much to most people, but to rap enthusiasts all over the world it has become a haloed day of remembrance for it is the day that Christopher Wallace AKA Biggie Smalls AKA The Notorious B.I.G was  killed in a drive-by shooting outside the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.  A week later, Life After Death was released and changed both rap and pop music’s landscapes forever.  While it can be argued that Puffy’s Bad Boy Empire laid the ground work for what became the hyper-material era of excess that would come to dominate the air waves for the next decade and a half Biggie’s contributions as lyricists can not be overlooked.  There is not a rapper around who does not tip his fitted to the late great Frank White, the King of New York.

With that being said, I wanted to shine some light on a couple great blogs that have done excellent pieces on this, the 13th anniversary of BIG’s passing.  The first  is Up North Trips.  Up North Trip’s is an amazing website for any hip hop head, compiling amazing amounts of vintage photography, promotional material, and rare mix-tapes for download.  They also have a penchant for Mike Tyson and 80’s baseball which I’m not too mad at either.  For Biggie they have continued this tradition with countless pictures, audio clips, quotes, and videos in a celebration of everything B.I.G.

Second, is Skratch Bastid.  Skratch is a Canadian DJ based out of Montreal who runs a blog that usually focuses on himself and his performances/travels, but is entertaining and often has great links to mix-tapes.  To mark the occasion Skratch wrote a great piece reflecting both on day Biggie died, but some of his favorite samples that he rapped over.  Written from a true digger’s perspective it gives a readers insight to how samples makes beats that shape lyrics that become classic.  You can tell that he’s a beat head that really enjoys the entire process and the history.  As an added bonus he provides links for your listening pleasure.

So, whether you you’re a die-hard head who loves ‘Who Shoot Ya?’

or, just love getting down when ever ‘Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems’ comes on

Or, Dances With Wolves meets Pochantas but bigger-budget, with CGI blue aliens and a hot action star playing the paraplegic lead and a catchy title that, based on box office numbers, only turned three people off from going to see it because they thought it had something to do with “the internets”.

What arguably shoulda won best picture…

Did they just nominate District 9 because Peter Jackson was behind it and peeps still can’t get over LOTR?

And what did win Best Picture, THE HURT LOCKER — the film that also scored an historic win for the first female director to win an Academy Award, Kathryn Bigelow.

You knew this had to get some love with Oprah and Tyler Perry behind it. Winner of Best Supporting Actress for Mo’nique as well as an historic win for the first African-American screenwriter to get an Academy Award, Geoffrey Fletcher for Precious.
