WTF. No, seriously. What is this? For the past month runners through Chicago’s Lincoln Park have been speculating as to the cause of the newly installed grove of painted trees, incidentally painted candy-corn orange and yellow the week before Halloween. Event props? Nope. One month later, they’re still standing. Protective paint to preserve the delicate baby-tree bark from a harsh Chicago winter? Word on the streets is Chicago’s due for a mild winter, and anyway– no. When someone suggested that this was an art exhibit — the initial guffaws and “get right out of town”s eventually quieted as an amused contemplation settled in: They’re in the computer… Best conversation piece of the season. Props Chicago Park District and Moore Landscaping for their collaborative art installation, Painted Forest: 100 defoliated [dead] trees painted in hues of orange and yellow.

Wonderful World Of Fashion!

With illustrations by talented artists like Nina Chakrabarti, who came up with the upcoming book “My wonderful world Of Fashion: A book for Drawing, Creating And dreaming ,” coloring books are no longer just for toddlers.

By asking budding fashionistas to open their art supplies and imagine working in the world of haute couture, Chakrabarti provides 272 pages dedicated to clothing design, patterns and accessories. The illustrations make for a lesson in the history of dress combined with sharp how-to-guides for creating saris, head scarves and more.

Launching September 23 of this year, “My Wonderful World of Fashion: A Book for Drawing, Creating and Dreaming” is available for pre-order here.

Chie Mahari, New Fall Collection

With fine architectural structure supporting a flirty feminine exterior, Chie Mahari’s latest collection continues to define a brand that draws on a range of influences—from urban snow boots to Ferragamo.

Inspired by a sketch in a Spanish catalog from the late 40s, “Kaira” (far top) is an “ultra femme meets rock and roll” shoe with detachable fur trim. “Keiti” (top) balances a rugged look with a polite heel perfect for city-dwellers looking for Snow Mountain chic. Ferragamo, one of Mihara’s most admired designers, was on her mind when she designed “Kalu” with its versatile retro look.

Based in Elda, Spain but born in Japanese and raised in Brazil, Mihara is most noted for her comfortable high heel shoes thanks to an anatomic footbed construction she designed. The shoes have to be sexy but they can’t hurt, she says. “It’s a man’s industry so the key is to take aspects of men’s shoes and incorporate them into women’s shoes.”
